The CLAIREN philosophy
Recovery begins with understanding the person.
Addiction may be what brings a client to CLAIREN. It is rarely the whole story. The four positions below are the clinical claims the practice is built on.
Position 01
Understand the function.
Addiction is usually first recognised through its consequences; substance use, gambling or other compulsive behaviour, growing disconnection, and the effect on health, relationships and professional life. Those consequences matter, but they are rarely the whole picture.
CLAIREN looks past the behaviour to what it has been helping the person manage, avoid, numb or endure. Working with the psychological, emotional and relational factors that sustain it allows treatment to address not only the behaviour, but the job it has come to do.
The aim is not only to stop a destructive pattern, but to build more adaptive ways of responding to distress, to relationships, and to pressure.
To change the behaviour, we first need to understand the purpose it has come to serve.
Position 02
Treat the whole person.
Addiction is rarely the central problem. More often it is a response to one.
It develops through an interaction of biology, personal history, relationships, environment and, for many of the professionals CLAIREN treats, the pressures that come with high performance and responsibility. Whether rooted in trauma, loss, anxiety, burnout or perfectionism, it cannot be understood by examining the behaviour alone.
CLAIREN works on both at once: the addiction itself, and the factors that sustain it.

Position 03
Psychotherapy at the centre.
Where additional specialist input is clinically indicated, CLAIREN coordinates it as part of the wider plan. Psychotherapy, however, remains at the centre of the work.
Within a trusted therapeutic relationship there is room to look past the presenting behaviour and explore what contributes to and sustains it. It is also where the realities of leadership, responsibility and high-pressure professional life can be understood and brought into treatment rather than left outside it.
The aim is not to separate recovery from the life a client leads, but to develop the insight and psychological flexibility that let recovery become sustainable within it.
One clinician, from the first call through to long-term recovery.
Position 04
Integrated, not templated.
CLAIREN's therapeutic approach is person-centred, trauma-informed and integrative. It draws on evidence-based modalities, but treatment is tailored to the individual rather than dictated by a predefined model.
Every plan is designed around the client's history, current pressures and recovery goals. As understanding deepens and circumstances change, the approach adapts with them.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
- Trauma-informed psychotherapy
- Integrative psychotherapeutic approaches
These are among the approaches most frequently used within CLAIREN. Treatment is not delivered through a standardised model; it draws on the modalities best suited to your clinical presentation.
These four positions define the model in practice: one clinician, one personalised treatment plan, and one continuous line of care from assessment through to long-term recovery.
