For referring professionals

Referral information: Consultation, treatment and continuing care.

CLAIREN for referring professionals · October 2026

No charge. No referral expected or implied — useful for a case you are unsure about.

CLAIREN is a single-clinician private practice in psychotherapy and addiction treatment in Edinburgh, led by Sander Tubbergen. This note sets out what it does, what it does not do, what a referral returns to you, and the fees. Most referrals are to the Consultation, an assessment that commits the patient to nothing further.

What CLAIREN is.

A private practice for adults whose work, position or circumstances make the usual routes into treatment difficult, and for the partners, families and advisors around them. One clinician holds each case from the first conversation onward. Where psychiatric, medical or other specialist input is needed, he coordinates it rather than handing the patient off. Sessions are remote or in person in Edinburgh; remote work with patients outside the UK is taken on only where professional and regulatory requirements allow.

Who it is for, and what is treated.

Substance-related

  • Alcohol dependence and problematic drinking
  • Cocaine and other stimulant use
  • Prescription medication dependence, including benzodiazepines and opioids
  • Cannabis, ketamine and other recreational drug use
  • Polysubstance and complex patterns of use

Behavioural and co-occurring

  • Gambling
  • Sexual and pornography-related compulsive behaviour
  • Compulsive working, spending, gaming
  • Trauma, anxiety, burnout, depression and shame where they sit alongside the addiction
  • Relationship and family-system difficulties

What it is not for.

Withdrawal risk is screened at first contact. Where medically managed withdrawal, inpatient stabilisation or urgent psychiatric care may be needed, CLAIREN says so at that point, and medical assessment is arranged before any psychological work begins, through a consultant psychiatrist colleague. Nothing here is a route for emergencies. Referrals routed through an employer, HR or occupational health are not accepted: the practice takes referrals from people who act for the individual, not from those who employ them.

Colleagues

Core therapy, including family and couples work, is delivered by Sander. EMDR and specialist trauma work: Dr George Reid, Chartered Psychologist, HCPC registered. Consultant psychiatrist (assessment, prescribing, withdrawal) to follow.

If you are in immediate danger or need urgent medical help, do not wait for a reply here. Call 999 or attend your nearest A&E department. For urgent mental-health support, call NHS 111 and select the mental-health option.

The Consultation.

Every engagement begins with a Consultation. It is a complete clinical service in its own right, carries no expectation of further treatment, and is the thing most referrals will be to.

Format
Three seventy-five-minute sessions and a thirty-minute follow-up, remotely or in person at a private location.
Timeframe
Seven to ten days from the first assessment session to the written Clinical Direction. The initial enquiry call is separate and unpaid.
Content
Biopsychosocial assessment and formulation; substance and behavioural history; triggers, vulnerabilities and maintaining patterns; co-occurring anxiety, trauma, mood and burnout, where clinically relevant; the professional, relational and lifestyle context bearing on the presentation; and, where indicated, coordination of a psychiatric or addiction-medicine opinion before the Clinical Direction is finalised.
Fee
£1,450, fixed, for the whole Consultation: three sessions, the thirty-minute follow-up and the written assessment report and Clinical Direction. There is no charge for the initial enquiry call. No further fee is due, or expected, unless the patient decides — after receiving the Clinical Direction, not before — to begin treatment with CLAIREN. Where that follows, the initial eight-week course of Active Treatment is £8,400, in two instalments of £4,200, and continuing care, where appropriate, is from £650 a month; both are confirmed in writing before they begin. A referral to the Consultation is not a referral into a treatment programme, and carries no financial commitment beyond the fee stated here.

What you receive back.

With the patient’s authorisation, the written assessment report and Clinical Direction is sent to you directly. It sets out the assessment findings, the clinical formulation, and a considered recommendation for what should happen next, whether that is treatment with CLAIREN, referral to a psychiatrist or addiction-medicine colleague, a different specialist or service, or no further intervention at all. Where CLAIREN is not the right place for the patient, that is said as plainly as the alternative would have been, and said early enough to be useful to you. No report is shared with you without the patient’s agreement; a referral does not, on its own, entitle you to one.

What happens afterwards.

Most referrals end at the Consultation. Where the Clinical Direction recommends treatment with CLAIREN, that begins only once terms are agreed and confirmed in writing; where it recommends something else, an appropriate handover is offered, with the patient’s agreement, to the relevant colleague or service. If treatment with CLAIREN does proceed, one clinician holds the case throughout and, again only with the patient’s authorisation, you are kept informed at whatever level of detail has been agreed between you, the patient and CLAIREN at the outset.

Confidentiality, as it actually operates.

Every conversation is held in clinical confidence, within the limits UK safeguarding law requires. That a referral was made, and anything discussed within it, is not shared with anyone, including you, beyond what the patient has authorised, except where disclosure is required by law, by safeguarding obligations, or because of serious clinical risk. This runs in both directions: CLAIREN will not confirm or discuss a referral with a third party without the patient’s agreement, and will not withhold information from statutory authorities where the law requires disclosure. If you are referring on behalf of someone else rather than for them directly — an employer, an occupational health function, or another third party with an interest in the outcome — please refer to “What it is not for,” above.

How to refer.

Call +44 (0) 7377 252211. Calls are answered personally by Sander between 10:00 and 20:00, Monday to Saturday, subject to clinical commitments. Signal is available on the same number: send “CLAIREN” to begin. There is no admissions team and no intake call: the first conversation is with the clinician who will hold the case. If you are unsure whether a case is right for a referral, ask for the twenty-minute clinical opinion call, offered without charge and without any expectation that a referral will follow. Written referral notes, where you have them, can be exchanged securely over Signal or encrypted email, or discussed directly by phone.
