Is residential rehab the only option?

What residential treatment does well

For a long time the answer to a serious drinking or drug problem has been a building: four to six weeks away, a programme, a return. For some people that is exactly right, and this page will say when.

Residential treatment removes access entirely, provides medical supervision through withdrawal, and surrounds someone with structure and peers at a moment when their own judgement may not be reliable. Where safety is a genuine concern, that is not a small advantage. It is often the right starting point.

What it asks of someone who cannot be absent

But it asks for something many people cannot give: a month of absence that has to be explained. A gap in a calendar, a business left without its principal, a family told a story that is not quite true, or not told anything at all. For someone whose position depends on being reliably present, that absence can create more exposure than the problem it is meant to solve.

It is not the only way treatment can be structured.

What treatment looks like without leaving

Structured private treatment can run alongside a working life rather than replacing it. Regular sessions, several times a week, built around a formulation of what is actually driving the behaviour rather than a fixed programme. Delivered in person or remotely, at times that fit around leadership and family responsibilities, with the same clinician throughout.

Nobody outside the arrangement needs to know it is happening. There is no admission, no discharge, and no gap to account for.

When residential is the right answer

There are situations where it genuinely is the right answer: significant withdrawal risk that requires medical supervision, safety concerns that outpatient treatment cannot manage, or a home or work environment so bound up with the behaviour that distance is clinically necessary. If that is the situation, it is better to know clearly and early than to discover it after months of something less than what was needed.

How to find out which it is

The way to find out is a Consultation: three 75-minute clinical sessions leading to a written Clinical Direction that sets out, plainly, whether residential care, structured treatment without leaving, or something else entirely is the right next step. It costs £1,450, agreed in writing before it begins, and carries no obligation to continue into treatment with CLAIREN. Where residential care is what is needed, a considered introduction can be arranged.
